Numerous studies show that job stress is far and away the major source of stress for American adults and that it has escalated progressively over the past few decades.
Increased levels of job stress (resulting from the perception of having little control but lots of demands) have been demonstrated to be associated with increased rates of heart attack, hypertension, and other disorders.
A Patient-Reported Outcomes Perspective published online in 2012 begins with this statement: Health impairment often leads to work impairment in the form of both absenteeism and presenteeism (i.e. reduced productivity while at work).
And the Harvard Business Review backs up that statement, reporting that people going to work when they’re sick (presenteeism) accounts for nearly two-thirds of the total costs of worker illness.
